'some'.

But it does sound good. I'm assuming this will mean the server will be based in waffle-land? I don't have a problem with that as I don't think it'll make a difference to pings.

If we ran (for example) a L4D(2) server would it be found on Steam 'searches' or would we just connect directly? Again, not that I care so much but if non-SOE's are connecting it gives us some advertising for new blood/wallets etc. If it's not connected to based on that then we're loosing out on that 'advertising'.

I'm interested in what the system requirements are for a decent L4D(2) gameserver or the newer game equivalents so that we can calculate what second-hand server pricerange we have to look at.

Also, i couldn't care less about the location as long as it's near a backbone in europe wich would offer us a delay of 50 ms max. If you can get the colocation really cheap in the UK we might still be off better then renting a different one every x months.

You could even install all the game server files and run whatever you want depending on what you feel like...

It would certainly avoid the situation we have now where we're paying for l4d and l4d2 servers cos a few weeks ago only a few of us had l4d2, now we all do we're paying for an l4d server we don't need.

I think this sounds like a great idea. Provided the "Steam searches" thing from my post above pans out ok.

Yes, the server would show up on the available servers list.

I'm going to start looking into the requirements.

our current site gives me a download speed of about 1mb/s at home so we can conclude two things:

- the new host is slower
- your interwebs connection is pretty crappy

ok the question is, the current host with good download speed is £30 a month, that one I'm looking at is is £8.50 with not as good download speed but should be still good I'm hoping for site speed.

I say we move host and save a considerable amount of money each year which we can put towards a server. In the downloads section arent any files that can't be obtained anywhere else. Is the bandwith and disk space with the possible new host large enough?

Ok so the disk space is the same and the bandwith is larger with the new host.

the current host also mentions guaranteed memory and CPU weight but I cant find anything about that with the other host, is that something to look into?

I was getting 30-60kbps, it jumped to 180kbps at some point, but that was about the max.

At the same time I did a speedtest.net:
