Moving Host

Postby bigwookie » 17 Jan 2010, 13:19

I've be moving hosts shortly due to performance issues and the expense of running a un-needed webserver, basically for one month subscription for a server I can get a full years webhosting. So expect some down time and limited functionality over the new week or so.

That is all...

Ok this didn't happen as I'm finding it hard to find a good host, if anyone knows a good host that will allow us to run streaming and downloads let me know.

I think it's the all-in-one package that you are running on the server that is so demanding, no?

How about a dedicated server that can be both gameserver, webserver and teamspeak server? Wouldn't that be cheaper? I'm currently experimenting with running my own UrbanTerror server before the new version 4.2 comes out.

So any old webhost with PHP support for the forums won't do? Should be able to sacrifice the downloads if needed and as for the streaming requirement is it really used anymore?

Would be a waste to get a dedicated server for about £50-60/month vs webhosting and separate TS for about £15/month for the sake of downloads. The TS server was reduced in capacity a few months back right? As for running game servers off such a basic box I really think you'd struggle.

What i've done for a recent project with similar needs is buy a second-hand HP DL360 G4 server with 2 GB RAM for under 170€, set up mirroring and took colocation with a befriended company that had unlimited fiber access (8Mbit) for 325€ a year. The server is running CentOS and hosts 170+ low traffic websites, around 20 databases (mysql, postgres), services (nginx and cherokee with rails, django, php) and even an ERP system for 10 users (openBravo). It isn't the most fancy data center available, they don't offer SLA's, but then again you don't need those things for gameservers either. We charge for the webhosting and have already a nice savings account to buy a new server with all the bells and whistles including some level3.com colocation.

Maybe we could set something up the same way? I'm pretty sure i can colocate a second server there and put the fee on my tab as contribution, which leaves you guys with finding a decent second-hand server that would last at least 3 years. We would then install the game server, web server, teamspeak server on it and save loads of money (as eg 250€ server over 3 years wich is less then 85€ a year).

:?

Alot of nerdy words, but I think it sounds good providing we can raise the funds. Guess Wook is gonna need to look into it seeing he holds the kitty and probably has some understanding of what Tim is saying.
